Today, we were joined by the mighty Vince so with the force of three warriors and their mini-warrior assistant, we motored over to the island to start a new day of work.
Vince and Darren got to work getting the main beams in place with Darren's Dad managing everything with incredible depth and detail. Bob had picked up a can of our new favorite spray paint 'Zinc Mate', a galvanised spray which prevents rusting and which coined the phrased of the day, 'could you pass the Zinc, Mate?'.
I was on lifting duty, bringing the beams to the boys as they slotted them carefully in place on the structure.
I was promoted mid-way through the morning to 'drill-girl', helping to drive in the bolts in the various key points on the dock. (n.b. check out my new gloves: here seen modelling the new range in 'carpentry-fashion')
Bob got to work sawing the lumber to the relevant sizes and Darren and Vince started to install the joists within the square structure.
Things were really starting the take shape however in the background and without us realizing, the weather was starting to turn in. We desperately wanted to get us much done so battled on for as long as the rain didn't become a squall and we would start to have issues with the power tools.
An important pause to salute the hero of the trip, Bob's 'Gibbs' spray. Its a miracle worker for all things [in the world] and a worthy addition to any household http://www.gibbsbrand.net/
My next job, in my role of Junior Carpenter, was to chisel away the wood from the lumber that would then become the posts at the sides of the deck. Darren and Bob did this nifty cross-hatch manoeuvre with the saw which meant i could push out the wood from the section needed to be cleared and then clean it up with the chisel.
It took as while but I very much enjoyed this job and it kept me quiet while the boys got on with the major construction.
All in all a brilliant day and we got home soaking wet, but happy. Bring on tomorrow!
