Year Two Day One Hundred and Thirty Three - Basswood Bas Relief Wood Sculpture

Dear all,

Today I am back-tracking again slightly, desperately combing through my photos taken on my trusty BlackBerry to find more little gems from the last semester. I managed to take a few pics of my relief wood carving so have decided to dedicate a post to this piece.
Our project involved using 'Basswood' http://www.oplin.org/tree/fact%20pages/basswood/basswood.html, a very soft wood, ideal for junior-carvers. I was particularly concerned about this project as i am not known for my detail work with tools ( having nearly cut my finger off while chopping carrots the week previously) and everyone watched with bated breath, as I took the first cut with the chisel.
I had decided to carve two chili peppers ( I love peppers) and carved using a clay/ paper mould reference (** more posts to follow on this).
I am not going to lie, I found this project challenging. I cut myself (see below) and ended up at the first aid unit... and found the act of 'cutting away' to create the image very tough. We also used some mechanical tools *gulp* and various ways of sanding and finishing the piece and after many (many) hours, I finished... and it was a success!
Here is my finished basswood relief carving of two peppers and I still have all five fingers, hurrah!
