Dear all,
I am cheating slightly today, but only by in the name of 'catch up' after the lost months over the First semester when i was embarking on the dramatic and steep learning curve that is 'welcome to art school'. I am cheating only in the sense that what I am discussing today, I didn't actually do 'today', just a few months ago... but it fits in perfectly to what I will post tomorrow.... you get my drift.
We were given the task of carving out 'something' in Alabaster or soap stone. The size was small, the due date was looming and after a brief tour of the tools, we were off!
I decided to carve a nude; I love nudes and thought it 'might' work well... this is whilst not having the slightest clue about how to carve stone and how on earth I was going to achieve it. I started with a 'large' stone, hoping that this would minimise the inevitable 'over carve'. I also got a little over zealous with the drummel tool at various points which meant my finished product was 'small'.
However, I got there! And here she is.... I named her Berenice after Berenice Bejo (from The Artist.. even though I am yet to see the film, I know instinctively that i will love it and want to be her). I enjoyed carving although it's INCREDIBLY messy and dusty, in fact I went full-mask for the majority of the carve as was finding it laborious to breath. That said, it's somewhat calming ( until you shave off a boob... I did this.. but manage to give her a pretty good reconstructive surgery although she is ultimately a little smaller than first planned).
So that was the first phase... (and there are many phases to go).
