Dear all,
Woe is me, we have a [very] sick rooster. It is unclear as to the cause of the injury but it appears that his leg has been sprained and/or broken and he now lies on his side banging his leg against the floor with quite an impressive [yet disturbing] beat.
So, he was scheduled for the chop. There was no hope for our feathered friend and in the spirit of good old-fashioned farm living, it was time to chop off his head with an axe.
Everyone was rather excited about this being, 'The Ultimate' in Blog fodder and although I was immediately very anxious about it, I agreed to 'be involved'. It was certainly a big step for the fairy-child who less that one year ago started to eat chicken after a 20 year meat-hiatus.
Chris prised the chicken from the hospital cage and told me to grab the axe at which point I started to hyperventilate and scream 'NO Chris, I can't, I can't do it!!!'.
'Yes, you can you wimp' he replied, 'you are a country girl now!'.
I then started to cry out repeatedly, 'no, I can't, no I can't'. He then laid the chicken down on a work bench [with all the horses, including my baby, Una who is very impressionable] and said, 'Well you hold him and I'll chop off his head'. This was waaaaay too much for my sensitive core and I started to have a minor panic attack and continue to yell, 'I can't, I can't'...
Chris rolled his eyes and sighed, 'OK, we will do it another day'..
Hurray!!! The Rooster has lived to see another day and my chicken-karma has retained a clean slate. Phew. Despite now eating chicken [bought from a shop] there is NO WAY I am ready for the slaughter house. You can take the girl away from Vegetarianism but you can never take the deep love for animals in their fluffy form out of the girl.
And in other news:
1. Our beautiful mini Buffalo gets cuter by the day.
Here she is wearing her first junior head collar, I managed to get it on with no problems at all. She is SO adorable!
