Day One Hundred and Forty Six - Fly Masks

Dear all,

The heat wave has hit again but is this time accompanied by the fleet of evil and vindictive black flies. Known to locals as 'The Black Death' but mainly because they are so damn annoying.

A fly mask is a mask used on horses to cover the eyes, jaw, and sometimes the ears and muzzle to protect from fiendish flies. The mask is semi-transparent and made from a synthetic mesh allowing the horse to see and hear while wearing it. The mask may also provide some protection from UV rays ( Always good to avoid sun burn on the face)

Most have fleece padding around the muzzle and other sensitive areas. Masks come both with and without covers for the ears. Most attach with velcro, but a few high-end designs made with mesh and stretch lycra need to incorporate zippers instead. I must say, a couple of ours are looking a little worse for wear... will have to get mum involved when she comes out... hee hee.

Here a very sweet picture of our little Rimba with mask'. She didn't want to be left out but the only mask we could find was slightly over sized. The horses now resemble Storm Troopers but at least they have some relief from the dreaded flies!

Below two videos of my attempts to engage the fly masks on my two willing volunteers, Kelsey and Imagine.

And in other news:
1. Mac trying to 'hide' during 'bath time'. He has no comprehension that just because he can't see us... doesn't mean we can't see him.
