Day Three Hundred and Forty Seven - Eugenia Falls

Dear all,

Today we decided to head out into the Wilds of Grey County and despite the grizzly weather, we made trail for Eugenia in the hunt for the world famous Waterfalls.

The Falls are the result of the Beaver River cascading over a large cliff face in Eugenia and were discovered back in 1852 by 'Mr Brownlee' who immediately confirmed the presence of 'Gold'. The Gold Rush ended swiftly upon the discovery that the substance was in fact Fool's Gold [Pyrite], but despite this minor hiccup, this hidden gem was to become a national treasure and celebrated throughout Ontario.

And what a majestic beauty it is! Everything from the cascading water to the breath taking back drop. I would highly recommend a visit to the falls; for a hike, a picnic or just a brief moment standing next to this fabulous spectacle.

We had a wonderful time hiking around the waterfall after stumbling on the Bruce Trail which circumnavigates the falls on its way along the Niagara Escarpment.

The Bruce Trail is lovingly maintained for my various commitees and we were excited to be able to follow a fresh trail of markings on our ramble; the trail being marked exclusivley by White and Blue Flecks on passing trees.

Our hike continued until we found a fabulous look out that show cased the falls in their glorious, majestic beauty.

We took numerous photos, especially Dale who is a dab hand with the camera. Darren took some fabulous video footage on his phone, a couple of which I have posted here.

As you can see, even during this time of year, the area is utterly beautiful. Just imagine the falls in the summer with the trees in full bloom and turquoise skies.. sigh.
The day finished off on a somber note as we visited the neighboring War Memorial just next to the falls but this only added an extra layer to our day and we left bubbling over with enthusiasm, eagerly discussing our next adventure!

And in other news:
1. We also dropped in on the 'Eugenia Emporium', a fabulous general store full of miscellany including old fashioned candy, hot sauce and all the latest magazines ( including Deidre's Fashion Mag!)

The store is run by 3 retirees, fresh from the big city and now happy, back in the shire, making their ' World Famous' pickles. After years of growing incredible pickles, friends and family persuaded the guys to start selling their wares and they have not looked back! http://www.thepickleguy.com

We picked up a jar of their 'Jalapeno Relish' after a 'promise' to Darren that it would knock his socks off ( Those are big words, especially when talking hot sauce and we are excited to try it).
